The best cure is prevention.

Here are a few tips to protect yourself from a cough with phlegm.

  • Support your immune system with enough sleep, a healthy diet and avoid alcohol or smoking.
  • Avoid very dry air. If necessary, use a humidifier to keep the air in a room healthy and moist.
  • Stay away from infected persons as they can transmit the virus, causing cold-related cough with phlegm.
  • Avoid shaking hands with infected people. Unfortunately, many people do still sneeze or cough into their hands, effectively contaminating them. This helps spread the virus to surfaces such as tables, door knobs, and others which leads to more people getting infected.
  • Pay close attention to your hands. Not touching the eyes or nose with fingers will decrease the risk of infection.
  • Wash your hands frequently with hot water and soap to avoid viruses causing cold and cough symptoms to spread.
